It was during the early 20th century that the British started their colonial control in Nigeria. The colonial manipulation was from a strong will or desire to ensure the protection of the railway construction. And also to safeguard the passage of tin to the coast.

As in the early 20th century during British colonialism, Bauchi province still consisted of the Plateau state and some other states. It was in 1926, that a new province broke out of Bauchi province. It was the Plateau province which consisted of the Jos and Pankshin divisions.

In May 1967 when Nigeria was with only had 12 States, Benue-Plateau state was formed when the two provinces were merged together. Plateau state was finally created from the Benue-Plateau state.

It covered the Plateau province region. This was done under the pressure from 1976 due to the civil war that made Benue-Plateau state split up under the military government of General Yakubu Gowon when the country was divided into 19 states.
