About African Women Journalism Project (AWJP) is hiring Head Researcher

The AWJP is an initiative dedicated to empowering women journalists by providing them with the skills and resources they need to create content that raises awareness of under-reported issues affecting women and makes a business case for sustained gender reporting. The initiative is supported by the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ).

Program Details

We are hiring a Head Researcher to work with our team on The Reporting Fellowship for Women Journalists in Francophone Africa project.

You will be working with a team of journalists, mentors, and data analysts in Burkina Faso, Senegal and Togo and play a pivotal role in designing the methodology for a research study that aims to contribute to the advancement of greater women representation, as well as increased reportage on gender and under-reported issues in the region.

This position is 100% remote and open to individuals in our project countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal,  South Africa, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda). Provable fluency in both English and French is a requirement for this position.

Eligibility

  • A PhD or Master’s degree in journalism, communication, or gender studies with a specialisation in data analysis or a related field or at least 4 years of working experience in those fields.
  • Proven experience in leading and conducting research studies, preferably in the field of gender and media.
  • Strong expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, data analysis, and statistical tools.
  • Familiarity with gender issues and challenges faced by women journalists in the context of Francophone Africa.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage a diverse team of in-country field researchers
  • Effective communication and presentation abilities, with fluency in both English and French.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the media industry.
  • Familiarity with collaborative tools like Slack, Google Workspace, Trello is a plus
