About the ACDI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Climate and Development 2021/2022

The aim of the DEAL program is to embed early career researchers within accredited research groupings at the University of Cape Town. This is to provide support for their development as the next generation of African researcher leaders.

The aim of the post-doctoral fellowship is to enable a recently graduated Ph.D. researcher to develop his/her own independent research. The research is to be conducted within one of ACDI’s priority thematic areas and is to be done under the guidance of a senior academic and research staff within the network of ACDI.

Research Areas

The fellowship needs candidates who propose an innovative initial two-year research program in any of the underlisted:

  • Modeling and assessment of climate risk in Africa
  • Synergies in poverty, inequality, and climate action
  • Governance of interacting climate and other societal crises
  • Economics and financing of climate adaptation
  • Nature-based solutions for climate change

Benefits

  • The fellowship value is R300,000 per year and it is payable as a tax-free stipend
  • The validity of the fellowship is two years and it continues into a second year only on the condition of achievement of agreed outputs.

Eligibility Criteria

A focus is placed on African early career researchers by the Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders (DEAL) so application from citizens of South Africa and other African countries is particularly encouraged.

Required

  • Possession of Ph.D. by applicant awarded within the previous four years. The degree should fall within the field of social science or natural science that is relevant to the research theme that the candidate desires to work within.
  • Given the applicant’s career stage, a strong publication record is required
  • Applicants’ desire and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team setting should be shown.
  • Applicant must possess the excellent organizational capability and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Applicant must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Desirable

  • An experience by applicants in facilitating multi-stakeholder processes
  • An experience by applicants in the translation of research into knowledge for policy and practice
