Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are intended for mid-career professionals from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to spend between six weeks and three months at a United Kingdom (UK) Host organization working in the Commonwealth sector on a programme of professional development. About the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2020

The Commonwealth Professional Fellowship which is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), provide motivated and talented professionals with the opportunity to boost and enhance their skills and knowledge of their respective sector. The Fellowships are offered under six development themes. These development themes are as follows:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

The main objective of the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships is to provide mid-career professionals (with at least five years’ of relevant work experience) working in development-related organizations in low and middle-income Commonwealth countries with the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills in their given sector, which will further impact catalytic effects on their workplaces.

Benefits

The Commonwealth Professional Fellowships to be taken at a United Kingdom (UK) Host Organization working in Commonwealth sector, provides selected candidates with Scholarships for a duration of six weeks and three months which covers the living expenses for the fellow as well as a return airfare to the UK. Furthermore, the scholarship provides funding support to the host organization, with a budget of up to £3,000 available for attendance at conferences, short courses, and other eligible costs.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for these fellowship, there are certain eligibility criteria that are required of the candidates. Candidate must:

  • Candidate must be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country or be a British Protected Person
  • Candidate should have permanent residency in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Candidate must have at least five years’ full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant work experience in a profession related to the subject of the Fellowships programme. It should be noted that by the proposed start of the fellowship, voluntary work experience will not count towards this requirement
  • Candidate must be in employment at the time of application which they will return to upon completion of the fellowship
  • Candidate must not have undertaken a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship within the previous five years (at the time of application)
  • Candidate should not be looking to undertake an academic programme of research or study in the United Kingdom. Note that Academics are eligible to apply for the scheme, but only to participate in programmes of academic management, not research or courses relevant to their research subject.

Candidate must be available to undertake the Fellowship between 1st of February, 2021 and 15th of  March, 2021. Selected candidates are advised to check exact dates with the prospective Host.

Selection Criteria

Applications for Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2020 will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. The extent to which the proposed Fellowship will ensure the transfer of skills relevant to the needs of a Commonwealth developing country
  2. The extent to which these skills and knowledge will lead to practical benefits for the developing country following the Fellowship
  3. The extent to which the Fellowship will have a catalytic impact, either within the concerned developing country or in establishing new relationships with the United Kingdom (UK)

Application

Applications can now be accessed online via this link and the form is to be completed before the deadline date for submission of application. It’s should be noted that candidate’s application must include at least two references by this date, one of which must be from your current employer, otherwise the application will be considered ineligible.

Once the deadline dates for applications and references have passed, candidate’s application will be shared with the Host organization applied to, for them to review all applications and nominate the candidates they wish to put forward to the Commission. The Commission will make the final selections of individual Fellows.

The deadline date for submission is on Monday 3rd of August, 2020 at 4 pm (BST) and the deadline date for the submission of required references is on Monday 17th of August, 2020 at 4 pm (BST)
