NYSC Signs MoU with IITA to Boost Agricultural Productivity. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the National Youth Service Corps with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The aim of the MoU is to boost the productivity of the scheme’s agricultural programme.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim at the brief ceremony which took place at the IITA headquarters gave thanks to the agency for making it possible for corps members to discover and develop their potentials in agricultural practices. According to him, there was enough patriotic zeal and energy in the corps members. He stressed that the nation will immensely benefit from their potentials if they are provided with the enabling environment by other Corps employers.

NYSC always encourages the youths to seek self-employment as stated by Ibrahim. It is the NYSC that introduced the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme in 2012 as a platform to make youths wealth creators and employers of a labour.

The scheme will continue leveraging on the existing relationship with various stakeholders for the benefit of Corps members and for the overall development of the nation as stated by Ibrahim.

All corps members serving at IITA are further advised by the Director-General to take a cue from their predecessors and embrace all empowerment opportunities that the agency provides. His statement went thus “I enjoin you to take advantage of the opportunities which will empower you and help to actualize the Federal Government’s vision on food security”.

Another speaker Mr Kenton Dashiell, IITA’s Deputy Director-General for Partnership and Delivery also stated that work has been in motion by the fifty-three-year-old institute to prevent poverty and hunger and to also enhance food security and economic diversification.

It was also noted that the agency places high premium on Corps members who are serving there over the years with the latter gaining experience while the former benefitted their potentials and ingenuity. The IITA Youth Agropreneur programme started with a group of youths posted for NYSC Primary Assignment in the Institute. They were encouraged to receive training in different profitable ventures in the agricultural value chain.

The Deputy DG disclosed that within the past eight years, about 665 Corps members had served in IITA. He also said that it was the desire of the institute to strengthen its relationship with NYSC to enable corps members and the rest youths of the country to be a part of the boosting agriculture and reduce the rate of food importation into the country.

The Director-General and his entourage were taking in a tour of facilities at the Institute during the visit.
