About the Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize 2024

The Royal Society is encouraging nominations of joint collaborations, groups or teams for almost all its medals to better represent how contemporary science is undertaken. In addition, the Society is extremely keen to broaden the diversity of those nominated for its awards, so do please consider all contacts and colleagues.

You do not have to be a Fellow of the Royal Society to nominate or to be nominated for any of the Royal Society medals and awards.

Program Details

This is to recognise early-career research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences. The prize was established in memory of Paul O’Brien FRS and his work encouraging excellence in science and education in Africa. Winners will receive a grant of £14,000 to support their research and a personal gift of £1,000.

Eligibility Criteria

The Royal Society Rising Star Afri

ca Prize is open to African citizens. It is restricted to early career scientists with no more than 15 years since achieving their PhD (not including career breaks) and nominations will remain valid and shall be considered by the award selection committee throughout three nomination cycles.

Nomination

Two referees are required to be submitted by the nominators for the nominee. There will be a request for these once nominations have closed, and they will be shared with the relevant selection committee.
