About the Thomson Reuters Foundations Bigger Picture Photography Competition on COVID-19 2020

The competition is open to people who have a passion for capturing powerful images of the COVID-19 impact on everyday people. It is not mandatory for you to be a photographer or journalist to apply for the competition.

Prizes

Winners of the competition will receive photo-journalism masterclass which will be delivered by the Thomson Reuters foundation’s world-leading trainers.

  • Participants will sharpen their existing storytelling skills and improve through workshops and mentoring.
  • Participants will also be offered the chance to work alongside the Thomson Reuters foundation’s news team on a story that will be shared through the foundation’s global distribution network.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The competition is open to all people who are interested in photography. All entries must be focused on the theme of the human impact of COVID-19.
  • Applicants must be aged 18 years and above on the last date for entry. Proof of age may be required.
  • Photographs submitted may be published or unpublished and all photographs must be original but can be preexisting or specially made for the competition.
  • Applicants must be available to attend the online masterclass which is scheduled for January 2021.
  • Members of staff working at the same organization as any of the competition judges or at the Omidyar Network, the Omidyar group, the Thomson Reuters foundation or Thomson Reuters, also the immediate family and household members are eligible.
  • Applications submitted by freelancers who work with the Omidyar group, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, or Thomson Reuters are eligible.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Coherence and relevance to the issues, raising awareness of the human impact of COVID-19 all over the globe and helping to document its extensive repercussions on the lives of people.
  • Depth of quality of the photography which includes impartiality, relatability, accuracy, originality, and creativity.

Application process

The submitted photograph must come along with

  • A description of the photograph giving context and background.
  • Bio-data of the applicant ( name, location) and also proof of age.
  • Applicants must submit a clear headshot of themselves.

Application Deadline

All interested applicants for the Thomson Reuters Foundations Bigger Picture Photography Competition on COVID-19 2020 are expected to submit their applications on or before October 28, 2020. Any application submitted after the stipulated deadline will not be considered.
