About the World Bank Group and the Financial Times’ Joint Global Blog Writing Competition
The competition is open for youngsters who are 16 to 19 years of age and are enrolled currently in a high school or secondary school. If you fall under the above and the COVID 19 pandemic has affected your learning or the education of your family member or friend, then the opportunity to tell that story has presented itself.
A disruption in our lives has been caused by the pandemic and the way we live work and learn is changing. Another crisis is now being created by the health crisis – an educational crisis.
An estimate of an additional 72 million primary school age children has been made by the World Bank to fall into learning poverty as a result of the extended closure of schools caused by the pandemic. Learning poverty is a situation in which a child at the age of 10 cannot read and understand a simple text.
The World Bank and Financial Times wants to hear from those whom the COVID 19 pandemic affected the most as the global community works on identifying solutions and they are the young people. By joining this blog competition, you can tell them what you think as they want to hear from you. You can do so by telling them:
How has your learning experience been affected by COVID 19? What would you tell educators and policymakers to do differently? What would make an impact on your learning experience?
This is the third joint global blog/essay writing competition of the World Bank and Financial Times and they are looking for your best innovative ideas, high-quality ideas, and solutions that will improve the outcome of education beyond the pandemic. Come and be innovative, persuasive, and bold.
Prizes
There will be a publication of the winning entry in the Financial Times (at its sole discretion) and the World Bank Group blog. The World Bank Group based on restrictions during the pandemic will find an additional virtual way to honour the winner in April 2021.
Eligibility Criteria
The following criteria are what the World Bank requires from candidates who are interested in applying for the writing competition:
- Interested candidates must currently be enrolled in high school or a version of secondary education
- Participants are required to be between the ages of 16 and 19 years
- It is compulsory that applicants submit entries in English
- It is required that entries are original contents and they must not have been previously published or lifted from other sources.
Judging Criteria
A high-level panel comprising of senior officials at the World Bank, Financial Times, and select partners will be responsible for judging entries. The criteria for judging entries will be:
- Originality
- Creativity
- Writing quality, and
- Solutions presented
Winners will be communicated with via the contact information they provided while submitting entries.
Applications
Interested persons who meet the above-listed requirements are to make submissions including:
- A strong blog or essay with a word limit of 500
- Name, age, school, email, and country the applicants live in
- Photos, videos, visualizations that help support the applicant’s story can be added.
